05 LAPALALA WILDERNESS SCHOOL

BIODIVERSITY CENTRE

THE STORY

The Lapalala Wilderness School is an educational centre located in Limpopo, South Africa. The school creates a connection between humans and nature, and is an advocate for conservation and biodiversity (LWSchool, 2024).

The Curator House is a new development in the school. It is a biodiversity centre with a presentation space, exhibition, and outdoor areas for exploration and relaxation times.

INFLUENCES

The vision of the founder Clive Walker, resonated with me. He founded Lapalala with the goal of connecting humans with nature. I aimed to bring the vision to life in my design.

The rings of a tree mimic our fingerprints, symbolising our deep connection with nature. I have chosen the tree rings for my concept as the symbol of man's connection to nature. The tree rings speak to layers, pathways, and growing outwards. I have aimed to create a space that connects the children with nature, both mentally and physically. Allowing them to learn the importance of conservation while engaging first hand.
