04 ONCE UPON A SENSE

EDUCATIONAL DESIGN

THE STORY

Redhill School is beginning to make changes to their facilities, learning towards a teaching philosophy known as The Reggio Emilia Approach. This philosophy was birthed in Reggio Emilia Italy by Lori Malaguzzi and is grounded in the idea that children are capable and resilient with a desire to learn.

This teaching approach utilises principles such as the environment as the third teacher, collaboration and interaction, project based learning, and the 100 languages of children; this symbolises the extent of the different ways that children express themselves (Reggio Emilia Approach, 2022).

Redhill’s new nursery school building is grounded in this approach, and it will flow over into the new junior school library.

INFLUENCES

The children are at the centre of the Reggio Emilia approach, in this design this idea is symbolised by a spiral. With the children at the centre of the spiral the library will aid their growth and journey through learning, expanding outwards as the spiral does.

Inspired by the idea of the 100 languages of children, the space will take them on a journey of the senses, expanding their minds to various ways of expression through the senses.
